Why does Christmas have red and green colors?

13 nov 2025

For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:5

Have you ever wondered why Christmas revolves around the colors red and green? Whatever their original meaning, I simply set out to find the meaning of the colors red and green. And, believe it or not, the colors red and green symbolize our Messiah Jesus.

Perhaps you don't celebrate Christmas because of its occult origins. Or perhaps you celebrate it simply because you want to "take advantage" of this time of the year to share the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus' birth, suffering, death, resurrection, ascension, and return... I respect both views.

For years, I personally banned the Christmas tree from my home, including all the ornaments, wreaths, and decorations, because of its occult origins. Today, I understand the reason for people celebrating it, including all the bells and whistles, and I seize the opportunity to share and write about my Jesus.

We can transform the negative meaning into a positive one. As an example of a tree, indoors or outdoors, I think of the tree from which they made Jesus' cross and on which they crucified Him, because He loved me so much and envisioned my eternal life with Him. His red blood flowed to give me a new, eternal life. With Jesus, I make a new beginning. Jesus gives me peace and allows me to grow in His way of life. Jesus is the One who provides everything I need. Jesus continually gives me His strength and renewed energy to face life's challenges. These things are all meanings of the colors red and green.

I keep my focus, in all my beliefs and different ways of celebrating, on the Lord Jesus. In the midst of and within this world, I can now enjoy this time of year in a relaxed way. I no longer get caught up in the tension of everything. And I can tell you. That makes life much more relaxed, and it also allows me to see the people who are thoroughly enjoying all the decorations through a different lens. I love people. I no longer judge them. What a liberation. Even though I know that the birth of the Lord Jesus took place in a completely different season, and all the other truths about His birth...

I am so passionate about the meanings of the colors red and green that I would like to share them with you. I will list them for you. Then I will leave the reflection with you to discover how these colors symbolize Who and What our King and Messiah Christ Jesus IS in your life.
